The Kenan-Flagler Business School seeks to fill the position of Chief Marketing Officer.

This position leads branding, integrated marketing, communications, public relations, and marketing strategy efforts for Kenan-Flagler Business School and all its constituent programs including, but not limited to a full-time MBA, four MBA programs for working professionals, an undergraduate business program, a Masters of Accounting program, Executive Education, a PhD program, and a collection of centers and institutes all advancing Kenan-Flagler’s objectives of Shaping Leaders/Driving Results.
This position reports to the Dean of the Business School.
The CMO’s mission is to build global awareness of the Kenan-Flagler brand and communicate its value to many audiences, including current and prospective students, corporate partners, recruiters, alumni, partners, donors, media and other external audiences. The position oversees and ensures the effective efforts of a marketing team of 7 professional staff supported by outside agencies.

The primary role of the CMO is to interpret and portray the Kenan-Flagler brand, as identified and defined by research and the Office of the Dean, to external audiences. This position is directly responsible for marketing efforts to elevate Kenan-Flagler’s regional, national, and international profile. The CMO position will serve as chief communications counsel and marketing strategist to the Dean and his senior team.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Lead the development and communication of marketing strategy for the school and be a consultative resource for applying the overall strategy to specific parts of the school.
2. Establish and monitor all aspects of the Kenan-Flagler brand and branding initiatives including research, messaging, compliance, integrated image, and visual identity guidelines.
3. Build core brand management processes, deliver the tools and guidelines to foster effective brand management, own the overall branding process, internal UNC brand site and guidelines, and maintain best practices information.
4. Support administrative and academic areas such as Admissions, Alumni Affairs, MBA programs, Executive Education, and Advancement in creating and distributing outreach messages and materials through various channels including but not limited to print, public relations, website, social media, mobile media and special events. For each of these channels responsibility includes format, content, policies, guidelines, and monitoring feedback. This includes target and segmenting internal and external audiences.
5. Manage a team of 7 professionals whose specific responsibilities include graphics, website development and maintenance, public relations, media relations, social media and program(s) marketing. Also coordinating and managing external marketing and communication vendors.
6. Establish and monitor metrics, both, local and global, for measuring brand performance. Include benchmarks where appropriate.
7. Communicate school related messages to a variety of audiences including but not limited to employees, students, media, potential students, faculty, alumni, corporate partners, etc. This also includes media relations, crisis management, and ranking organizations. All consistent with overall mission and strategic plan to ensure consistency of brand and message.
Candidates with a graduate level degree will be preferred. An MBA is preferred.
• Candidate should have 8+ years of experience in branding, communications and marketing. Experience with services or other intangible products will be a plus.
• Candidate should have experience in people management, budget management and project management preferably in a complex, matrix organization. Managing a budget in fiscally conservative, limited resource situation is preferable.
• Candidate should have held positions of leadership that required collaboration and multi-product or multi-discipline coordination. • Candidate should demonstrate a familiarity with, or at least openness to, new technologies and new marketing tools, including market research.
• Candidate should have experience setting and executing strategy
• Candidate should have a customer service orientation with some experience managing external vendors and marketing to multiple audiences.
• Candidates will be asked to present a marketing plan they have worked on to demonstrate capability in this area.
• Important skills for this position include communication, organizational, analytical, and influence.
